Exclusive vs shared leads: which is right for you

An exclusive lead is yours alone. A shared one is yours and three competitors'. The price gap is big; the results gap, too. Here's how to choose.

When you buy leads, one of the first decisions is whether you want them exclusive —sold only to you— or shared —sold to several buyers at once. There's no universal answer: it depends on your sector, your speed and your closing ability. But there's a clear logic.

What each one is

An exclusive lead goes to you and no one else. When you call, the contact hasn't spoken to three other providers that same morning. It costs more, but your conversation starts with zero competition.

A shared lead is sold to several companies. It's cheaper because the provider monetizes the same contact multiple times. In exchange, you compete in real time: whoever calls first and best wins.

The key question: can you be the first to call and the best to convince? If yes, a shared one can pay off. If not, exclusivity protects you from losing on speed.

When exclusive is worth it

  • High ticket. If a customer is worth thousands, paying more to avoid competing pays off. Think industrial solar or full renovations.
  • Long sales cycle. If the sale needs trust and several meetings, competing with three others from minute one penalizes you.
  • Small or slow team. If you can't guarantee a reply in minutes, exclusivity offsets your lack of speed.

When shared is enough

  • Volume and low ticket. Low-price services where what matters is quantity.
  • Fast team. If you call in minutes and close well, being first neutralizes competition.
  • Large markets. Where there's plenty of demand and "losing" a lead doesn't hurt.

The factor that changes everything: speed

With a shared lead, response speed isn't important: it's decisive. The contact usually stays with whoever calls first with a good message. If your process is slow, you're paying for leads your competitors will close before you.

A shared lead is a race. An exclusive lead is a conversation. Choose based on how good you are at running.
