Attribution: where each sale comes from

Without attribution, everything seems to work and nothing can be improved. Knowing which lead, channel and campaign generated each sale is what turns buying leads into a machine you refine.

Imagine you sell well but don't know exactly where those sales come from. From the sector A or B lead batch? From high-score ones or those nurtured for weeks? Without attribution, you don't know, and so you can't double what works or cut what doesn't. You optimize blind.

What attribution is

It's connecting each closed sale with its origin: which lead, from which batch, which sector, which intent level, after how many contacts. It's the information that turns "I think buying leads works for us" into "sector A at intent level gives us a cost per sale of X, double down there".

No attribution, no optimization. You can measure how much you sell, but not why. And what you don't understand, you can't scale sensibly.

The minimum to track

  • Lead origin: provider, batch, campaign, sector, tier.
  • Journey: how many contacts and via which channels until closing.
  • Result: won/lost and deal value.

This requires tagging every lead in the CRM from delivery. What isn't tagged on entry can't be attributed at closing.

The last-touch mistake

Attributing the sale only to the last touch ("closed after Thursday's call") ignores all the prior work: the lead, the nurturing, the follow-ups. To decide where to invest, what matters is the origin that put that customer into the funnel, not just the final push.

With real attribution you can rewrite the brief toward the profiles that close most, adjust the budget by sector and justify every euro. It's the foundation of buying leads that improves itself month by month.

Selling without knowing why is luck. And luck can't be scaled.
